ORIGIN OF THE NORM With the ISO 50001 standard published in 2011, an international standard for an energy management system was created for the first time. ISO 50001 is a management system standard. It is not industry specific and can be used by a wide variety of organizations, from small and medium-sized businesses to large corporations or government agencies. According to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), there are currently around 6,250 valid certificates in Germany. In 2018, the amended version of ISO 50001 was published, which focuses on adapting the standard to the uniform basic structure for ISO- Management system standards (so-called "High-Level Structure" - HLS).
FUNCTIONALITY OF ENERGY MANAGEMENT With the support of energy management, potential energy savings are identified and leveraged. When the energy flows in the company, the associated energy sources are recorded and analyzed. On this basis, suggestions for improvement are developed, evaluated for their profitability and then implemented. Thus energy management helps with the decision to invest in energy efficiency. In order to improve energy efficiency in the long term, companies define an organization-wide energy policy, set energy targets, draw up action plans and measure target achievement using performance indicators. Energy management also influences the organizational and technical processes in the company and the behavior of employees. Steps to introduce an energy management system

An energy management system is required to be able to determine and document the potential for optimizing energy efficiency and reducing costs in your company. It is advisable to use the PDCA cycle to establish a tool for continuous analysis and optimization in the company.

In the context of energy management and also in DIN EN ISO 50001 and 16001, the term PDCA cycle is often mentioned in order to characterize work organization and planning. More precisely, this problem-solving process comes from quality management and is based on the 4 letters that give it its name.

In the first step, "Plan", the desired goals and processes are defined and the general energy policy in the company is determined.

In the next step, “Do”, these processes are introduced and then monitored and measured in the subsequent “check”. In addition, the monitoring also includes the energy policy principles, the strategic and operational energy goals, the legal requirements and the energy management system in general.

In the final "Act" step, the derived optimization steps are implemented and improvements to the existing measures are initiated.
